Community Speedwatch

On August 20th, I reported how an Edgbaston PACT Meeting was given statistics for people speeding in Wellington Road. It’s a residential road with a 30 mph speed limit. In a recent test, over 59% of the people travelling in one direction were found to be over the speed limit with the fastest person clocked at just over a staggering 90 mph.

Today, residents, Councillors and the police joined forces to carry out a community speedwatch exercise in the road, using a hand held gun which shows what speed vehicles are travelling. Sept 09 160

With a dozen people on the side of the road wearing bright yellow jackets, you would expect people to slow down. Most did, but we still saw four or five who were travelling at over 40 mph. They will receive letters from the police warning them about their speed.

The best thing about today’s exercise though was the knowledge that  the police, Councillors and the community are working together on the problem.
